Al Di La is a hidden gem with a loyal following of locals and frequent Charleston visitors alike. I myself had never been before I started writing this piece and I have to say that most of the food and the atmosphere live up to the hype. I’ll always be a fan of a restaurant that offers homemade focaccia bread to keep me satisfied until the appetizer arrives.

When I told my sister, and soon to be frequent eating companion, that I would be a restaurant critic her first response was, “Start with the Fat Hen.” That seemed easy enough. If you keep up with new up and coming restaurants, you’ve heard of the Fat Hen. It’s the restaurant that too over John’s Island Café, revamped it and now serves Southern cuisine with a French flair.

Maggie Brooks
I was born and raised on Hilton Head where I grew up around sports, home cooking and good friends. I attended Elon University and earned a bachelor’s degree in creative writing and cinema. During my senior year I searched the job market as a blossoming screenwriter, found it floundering, and came to the conclusion that I liked and was good at three things; cooking, eating, and writing. Thus a food writer was born. After graduating from Elon in May, I relocated to Charleston to start culinary school at the Culinary Institute of Charleston. I’m excited to be writing about our great city and the amazing cuisine that makes it so amazing.
