All About Halloween and Fall!

There are several things going on this weekend that don't have anything to do with Halloween, and below I've listed some of the different events and going's on to try and catch this weekend. If you're a peanut fan, the first Lowcountry Peanut Festival is this Saturday (I told you – only in the south!!!), we can add another food item to celebrate each and every year – yeah! If you're a pet owner/lover then the annual Paws in the Park is on Sunday that benefits the local JASPCA, an event dear to my heart as my husband and I have 2 dogs and 2 cats. Plus many other events – but since it is so close to Halloween (and I love Halloween), I've included a list of just Halloween type of things that are going on that you should check out, to get you in the spooky mood, read on (Halloween events are listed last) ….

10/18(Thurs) – 10/21(Sun)

Fall Design Walk: Fall Design Walk through Upper King Street ’s Design Districtis from 5:30-8:30 tonight 10/18. A complimentary performance by the Charleston Symphony Orchestra will kick off the event from 5:15-5:45 p.m.  at the William Aiken House, 446 King St . Charleston Garden Festival: The Charleston Garden Festival will teach you how to make you thumb even greener if you attend the event this weekend at Middleton Place . The festival is from 9:00 am – 5:30 pm , 10/19-10/21. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the gate of $25 for advanced 3 day admission. Lowcountry Peanut Festival: Saturday, 10/20 at Riverfront park is the first ever Lowcountry Peanut Festival. Tony the Peanut Man (Antony Wright), a local entrepreneur who started his business as a street vendor is the founder of this event. The festival celebrates the official South Carolina snack: the boiled peanut (who knew?). Besides eating the official snack, the festival will include the “Steppin’ Up Championship,” where high school, middle school and youth groups from throughout the Lowcountry will compete. D.J. Akfool will provide music for the competition. Then the East Coast Party Band will play old Motown and beach music. The festival starts at 3 p.m. No charge for admission; peanuts cost $2.50 to $5. Paws in the Park: Hampton Park is "going to the dogs" this weekend, as the 15th annual Paws in the Park event takes place on Sun. 10/21 - 11 a.m.-3 p.m. It is Charleston ’s self-proclaimed premier party for dogs, and is hosted by the John Ancrum SPCA. There are all sorts of different events for your dog, such as an agility course, obedience classes, doggy putt-putt, education booths, and pet supply vendors. You can also enter contests for best-dressed pet, pet/owner look-alike, best tail-wagger, and the best kisser (the dog – not you). Petsmart is the event’s major sponsor, and their vet partner Banfield will be giving away 100 free microchips on a first-come, first-serve basis. South Carolina Aquarium's Fourth Annual Sustainable Seafood Festival: From noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday Oct. 21 at the Charleston Maritime Center , 10 Wharfside St . Some of Charleston ’s most well known chefs will face off in an Iron Chef-style type of competition, creating dishes featuring clams, shrimp and wreckfish. Fresh local shrimp right off the boat from Magwood Seafood will be available for purchase, as will other food items, beer and wine. Road Trips:

S.C. Jazz Festival in Cheraw , SC on Friday 10/19 and Saturday 10/20. Celebrate the legacy of jazz king Dizzy Gillespie in his hometown. The S.C. Jazz Festival includes art, jazz, gospel and children’s events. Tickets are $15 for one day or $25 for two days. The performers include: Ben Tucker, Kat Williams, Beth Chorneau, Mike Longo, Jimmy Owens, Paul West and John Faddis. For more information, call (843) 537-8420.

Edisto Fall Festival - All-day festival featuring kayak events, nature tours, children's activities, food, and music. Prices vary. Events taking place on the ACE Basin and Edisto Beach . Sat., Oct. 20. (843) 869-3867.

Halloween themed happenings:

Legare Farm’s seven-acre corn maze or pick up the perfect jack-o-lantern in the pumpkin patch. Admission is $6 ages 12+ / $3 ages 3-11 / under 2 free. They also have hayrides and the chance to make your own scarecrow.

West Farm has a huge 6-acre corn maze designed, mapped, and cut by MazePlay of Firth, Idaho, using GPS technology Admission is $8 ages 12+ / $4 ages 3-11 / under 2 free. The maze has over 3 miles of trails to wind your way through (and hopefully get out of). They also have a pumpkin patch with paint and decorations that are included in the price of the pumpkins. There is a hay bale maze for the kids, a farm zoo, Scarecrow Alley, a snack bar, and more fall type of activities for the whole family. www.westfarmcornmaze.com

Boone Hall Plantation 's Towers of Terror Haunted House and Black Forest Hayrides. These are open Thurs. and Sun., 7-10 p.m. , Fri. and Sat. 7 p.m. - midnight . Halloween week they are open Mon.-Wed. 7-10 p.m. $10/each attraction, $18/combination ticket

Boone Hall Plantation ’s Happy Jack Pumpkin Patch is open daily ($3 admission). They have a Pirate’s Mountain play area, a mini-maze, Happy Jack’s Spooky Hayride, and the Happy Jack Theater . www.boonehallplantation.com

Blackbeard's Trail of Terror: You'll weave your way through the forest and to the haunted depths of Blackbeard’s cursed waters at Blackbeard’s Cove in Mount Pleasant . Haunted Jail Tour: Tour Charleston 's most haunted building – the Old City Jail. Tours run nightly at 7, 8, 9, and 10 p.m - through Oct. 31 st. Additional times available on Halloween night. Ghosts of Charleston Emerge: Charleston Legends and Lore Ghost Theater takes you back in time to hear haunting stories straight from the ghosts who lived centuries ago. Halloween Extravaganza at St. Paul's Academy: Look into the haunted post office, get a grip on the greased pole, or try and charm the spirits with your karaoke talents, and more at this Halloween extravaganza behind St. Paul's Academy. Jaycees Halloween Harbor Cruise: The Charleston Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees) host a Halloween Harbor Cruise aboard SpiritLine Cruise's General Beauregard leaving from Patriots Point in Mt. Scarecrows on the Square: The annual display of scarecrows and pumpkin-folk created by local families and groups are displayed in historic Town Square in Summerville. You can vote for your favorite scarecrows at local businesses. Each vote will cost you a quarter but it benefits Downtown Restoration Enhancement & Management. Oct. 20-Nov. 4.
